Fripp Design

We’re Tweeting!

If the blog is too long and cumbersome; you can follow what we’re up to and what we think on twitter at https://twitter.com/frippdesign.

Please pass on to anyone who has an interest in all things design!

Congratulations Jenson Button (or should I say Tom Fripp!)

What a great result for British sport over the weekend. But for us the greatness is as much to do with Innovation as it is with the skill of Jenson Button. Team Brawn won both the constructors and Drivers championship; not just Button. With resources slashed and budgets cut, they still managed to come top of the pile; it just goes to show that money is no guarantee of success (but, of course it does help).

There is another world winning team who also competes through innovation based with Fripp Design and Research in Sheffield; Bromley Technologies Limited. This company have two world champions in the Men and Women’s Skeleton Bob…and Sheffield is not known for its abundance of Ice and Snow (believe it or not!). How do they do this? Through Innovative design and the application of technology to give them a competitive edge.

Innovation is absolutely key to gaining a competitive edge and we applaud the Governments recognition of this through schemes such as Innovation Vouchers. This is how Fripp Design and Research, Brawn and Bromley compete; by staying one step ahead of the game.

Oh, and the reference to Tom Fripp; he’s Jenson’s double…but without the glamorous lifestyle!!!

What an Utter Waste of Money!

We regularly receive tender notices and we received this today:

Artist / Designer
Entry Date: 14/10/2009
Reference: S2G091014112989/01
Type of document: Contract Notice
Country: UNITED KINGDOM
Nature of contract: Service contract

The awarding authority is seeking an experienced artist / designer to produce artworks to enhance the reception areas of two separate departments within a new community health centre building. Some workshop involvement from local communities may be required in the initial design ideas and the finished work should not require ongoing maintenance….

What an utter waste of tax payers money…what’s wrong with going to the local High Street, buy some prints and ornaments and use the rest of the budget to save someone’s life instead!

Design in Context – An Apology to Audi from our Blog Author!

When the new range of Audi’s were launched, my immediate reaction was ‘bling’ and what on earth are Audi up to; they’ve lost touched with their customers (I’m referring to the day time led lights).
Recently I was ‘invited’ to attend a speed awareness course where I discovered an interesting fact. In 2011 it will become compulsory for all UK vehicles to be fitted with ‘permanently on’ headlights; the premise being that pedestrians and other drivers will be more aware of vehicles. As a motorcyclist I was horrified about the impact on accidents (impact being the operative word!).
It then dawned on me what Audi have done; saved the lives of motorcyclists. Credit to them in doing their research (something we harp on about a lot regards to design projects), understanding the political impact on design in a wider context!
So, sincerely sorry to Audi; what a truly inspirational and great piece of design (even for the ‘wide boys’!)
